五分山氣象雷達站
Wufenshan Weather Radar Station
The Wufenshan weather radar station was built in 1996
to complement the functionality of two older stations,
one in Hualien (1966) and the other in Kaohsiung (1970).The
Wufenshan weather radar station monitors typhoons approaching
northern Taiwan, and improves heavy rainfall forecast
and frontal system detection. The real-time raw radar
data is transmitted back to the Central Weather Bureau
and other disaster management agencies. |

基隆河員山子分洪
Yunshantzu Flood Diversion Project of Keelung River
Keelung River is a tributary of Tanshui River. Its middle
and lower reaches flow through Taipei basin in which
Taipei City is located, with highly developed industries.
However, Keelung River is getting narrower and more
difficult to drain off floodwaters because of the enhancement
of industrial development in Taipei City, so the low-lying
area is often overflowed by the flood. Yunshantzu Flood
Diversion Project of Keelung River was assessed to be
a feasible scheme with economic benefits to reduce flooding. |

921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan
Chi-Chi earthquake, measured 7.3 on the Richter scale,
struck Taiwan on September 21, 1999, resulting in a
great number of deaths, collapsed buildings, and serious
economic losses. The athletic field at the Guangfu junior
high school was uplifted about 2.5 m and several school
buildings were destroyed. These collapsed buildings
and topographical changes are preserved in an outdoor
museum setting, the 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan,
to show the severity of Chi-Chi earthquake and to remind
the government and the public of the importance of disaster
preparedness and mitigation. |

桃米生態村
Taomi Eco-Village
Taomi Community was severely damaged due to its
close proximity to the epicenter of Chi-Chi earthquake.
Sixty-two percent of the buildings collapsed, many
lives were lost, and the natural environment was greatly
affected. After the earthquake, residents began to
reconstruct their community by integrating governmental
and non-governmental resources. Taomi Community was
successfully transformed from a traditional rural
village into an eco-village with the educational purposes
of ecological conservation and recreation.

水尾國小
Shui-Wei Elementary School
Shui-Wei Elementary School was located in Puli Township,
Nantou County in central Taiwan, and was damaged by
Chi-Chi earthquake. The architects took advantage of
the school’s ecological setting, ingeniously transforming
it into a forestry school embellished with water and
greenery. A nearby irrigation water body was routed
to the school, which enhances the unique beauty of the
campus and helps to create a natural science classroom
for all students. |

上安社區
Shangan Community
Shangan Community is a traditional agricultural community
located in the southern part of Shili Township, Nantou
County in central Taiwan. Its location and topography
make the community vulnerable to natural disaster risks
such as landslides, debris flows, floods, and earthquakes.
Chi-Chi earthquake caused severe damage to property
and extensive loss of life. However, community residents
worked diligently to rebuild the community, enhancing
its resilience and sustainability. |

石岡壩
Shihkang Dam
Chi-Chi earthquake greatly impaired the water-storage
function of Shihkang Dam. To ensure a stable water supply
of one million metric tons per day to the greater Taichung
area, the dam’s water storage, purification, and delivery
equipments were repaired or replaced. Irrigation system
and drainage infrastructure damaged by the earthquake
were also restored. |
